Medieval Market in Benicalap
The New Square of the Hermitage in Valencia hosts the Medieval Market of Benicalap, a festive event with traditional craft stalls, food and entertainment from September 4 to 6. The historic neighborhood comes alive with musical processions, itinerant shows and craft workshops.
Benicalap is a residential district of València, not a village. It sits northwest of the centre, well outside the ring most visitors walk, and it works like any city neighbourhood: bakeries, set-menu bars, a big park. The market takes over the Plaza Nueva de la Ermita, a local square rather than a walled enclosure, so treat this as an evening stroll rather than a day trip.
What a Spanish medieval market actually is
These markets are a September and October fixture across the Valencia region, and the shape is always the same: traditional craft stalls, food stands, roving street music and open craft workshops you can watch or join. The programme here lists musical parades, roving shows and craft workshops across the three days, 4 to 6 September. Exact times for each parade or workshop are published by the organisers on the official page, and they are worth checking on the day itself.
Getting there without a car
Because Benicalap is inside the city, an EMT city bus from the centre is all you need. One thing that catches visitors out: Spanish street events run late. Shops and many bars shut through the middle of the afternoon and the streets fill after dinner, not before it. Our guide to getting around València explains the bus, metro and tram passes; if you are driving, read where to park first, because street parking here vanishes on event nights.
With children, and what else is nearby
It suits families: craft workshops, flat streets for a pushchair, nothing you have to book. The Parc de Benicalap is a few minutes away with shade and a playground, useful for filling time before the square gets going. September is still hot in València, so carry water.
