Where Alzira is
Alzira is a city in the Ribera Alta comarca, on the banks of the Xúquer river, about 35 km south of València. Its name comes from the Arabic «al-yazira» (the island), because the old town sits on a river meander that for centuries functioned almost as a natural island. It retains a historic centre of narrow streets bearing traces of its Muslim and Christian past, and the whole comarca is known for its orange groves. It's easily reached by Cercanías train from València, on the line towards Xàtiva and Alcoi, or via the A-7 motorway.
Before or after the visit
If you head to the Ajuntament, you can grab a meal nearby at Camí Vell, a restaurant in Alzira itself. And if you're coming from València without a car, this guide on how to reach nearby towns without a car can help you plan the trip, since the event listing doesn't detail public transport access right up to the Ajuntament's door.
