More plans that weekend
The exhibition «The IVAM Collection to Date» showcases over 260 works by artists such as Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp and Cindy Sherman, offering different thematic routes (colour, ecologies, feminisms and conflicts) to explore modern and contemporary art. It is open to the public at the IVAM, located at Guillem de Castro 118, until April 23, 2028.
There is no rush with this one: the listing keeps it open until 23 April 2028. It brings out more than 260 works from the museum's own collection, including Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp and Cindy Sherman, arranged along thematic routes — colour, ecologies, feminisms and conflicts — rather than in chronological order. The listing gives an admission price of 5 €; confirm rates and concessions on the official site.
Why the thematic routes matter
A permanent collection hung chronologically tends to be walked through on autopilot. Grouping it by theme puts works from different decades side by side and asks a different question of each. Practically, it means you do not have to see it all in one visit: follow one route, leave, come back another day for another. With two years on the clock, that is the sensible way to treat it.
The IVAM, and getting there
The IVAM is the Valencian Institute of Modern Art, at Guillem de Castro 118 — the ring road that follows the line of the demolished medieval walls, right on the edge of the Barrio del Carmen. It is a few minutes on foot from the historic centre, and the Torres de Quart, one of the surviving city gates, are just down the same street. Plenty of EMT bus lines run along Guillem de Castro. Check the weekly closing day before you go — most museums here close one day a week.
When it fits best
- Midday in summer, when the streets are unpleasant and many small businesses shut for a few hours, or on any wet day: it is on our list of what to do when it rains.
- Pair it with the Centre del Carme, five minutes' walk away, for a morning of contemporary art without using transport at all.
- The full picture is in the best museums in València.
