The Work of Anselm Kiefer
Add to calendar
The first major exhibition of German artist Anselm Kiefer at the Hortensia Herrero Art Centre in València. The show includes pieces such as 'Danaë', a painting over thirteen metres wide. The exhibition will be open from 28 April to October 2026.
It stays open until 30 October. This is the first major show by the German artist Anselm Kiefer at the Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero, and the work that justifies the trip on its own is «Danaë»: a painting over thirteen metres wide — wider than anyone's field of vision, so you end up backing into the opposite wall to take it in. Admission is listed at 10 €.
The building is half the visit
The centre occupies the Palacio de Valeriola, a restored 17th-century palace at Calle del Mar 31, with seventeen galleries across more than three thousand square metres arranged around a courtyard. In the basement you can see the remains of València's Roman circus, uncovered during the excavation work — so a single ticket takes you from contemporary painting to the Roman city without leaving the building. Allow more time than you would for an ordinary exhibition.
Getting there
Calle del Mar is in Ciutat Vella, a short walk from the cathedral. The Colón metro stop is about five minutes away and is the sensible route in: the old town is a restricted-traffic zone and parking nearby is expensive where it exists at all. Check opening hours and the weekly closing day on the official page — Spanish museums usually shut one day a week.
What's on the same street
The church of San Juan del Hospital is half a block away and is among the oldest things you can walk into in the city; the Plaza Redonda is on the other side, on the way to the market. With this show, the quarter gives you a full morning of museums without touching transport — handy on a wet day too.
